Beam & Lux Calculator

How big is the beam on stage and how bright is it there? Trim height, distance, beam angle and luminous flux give you the beam diameter, the pool of light on the floor and the illuminance on floor and face.

Preset values are rough guides for typical fixture classes; for planning, manufacturer data counts. Lux values apply to the beam centre and ignore filters, gobos and dimming. As a guide: events and theatre often 300–800 lx on the face, video and streaming more like 800–1,500 lx.

How it works

The beam angle is the angle at whose edge 50 % of the centre intensity remains; the field angle goes out to 10 %. The beam diameter is 2 × distance × tan(angle/2). Luminous intensity in candela is roughly the luminous flux divided by the solid angle of the beam, and illuminance falls with the square of the distance. When light hits at an angle it spreads over a larger area: on the floor the cosine of the angle of incidence applies, on a vertical face the sine.

About the toolbox

All calculations run locally in your browser. Nothing you enter is transmitted; run sheets and soundboard labels are stored on your device only.

The calculators provide guide values for planning and setup. Manufacturer data, on-site measurements and safety regulations always take precedence.
