Level over Distance

SPL drop in the free field: point source −6 dB per doubling of distance, line source in the near field −3 dB.

Theoretical value without air absorption, room reflections or ground effect. It is no substitute for a simulation in system design.

How it works

In the free field the energy of a point source spreads over a sphere, so the level drops by 20 × log(d2/d1) dB. In its near field a line array behaves more like a line source at 10 × log(d2/d1) dB. In practice the value lies in between, and in the far field every array becomes a point source again.
